Bell Tower Construction Begins

StagingAs promised, things started to happen on September 8, 2009, at the Center Meeting House site as men and materials began to arrive.  The scaffolding seen in the photo around the tower is required for the workers to walk on during the restoration/renovation.

The next step in the process is the evaluation of the structure. This is followed by a challenging part of the process which is the abatement associated with lead paint disposal as dismantling of the old clapboarding begins. Note: as of September 16 you will notice that clapbpoards have been removed from the tower.

This project can only go forward because so many people have helped us to raise the money that is required to get the job done.  Many people have asked where this money has come from, and the answer is simple; from the people of Newbury!  It is coming as part of continuing support that is Stage_2being given by several donors who have supported us with long-term pledges.  It is coming from a couple who live in Newbury and elsewhere who decided to make a second major donation to see the tower project go forward.  It is coming through the support that we have received from so many people who supported the Navy Band Concert and the Historic Homes Tour and the Gala that preceded it.  It is coming from people who choose to join our organization and who often also add a few extra dollars to help move the renovation process along.  And a growing number of people are choosing to sponsor a pew for $5,000 for a family or other group.Rot

Speaking of our members, in 2005 Center Meeting House had half a dozen stalwart trustees who kept the grand old lady from totally collapsing through not much more than their love of the building.  Today, with a new organization and a new board of directors made up of nine Newbury area residents, our membership exceeds 200 people for the second year in a row.  It is this support that makes the difference.

In the picture opposite one can note the serious level of deterioration that has occurred with the tower.  As one of the areas of highest stress in the whole building due to wind load and the weight of the bell, and given that parts of it have already blown down in the past, we must be sure that it is in prime condition before we again position it to it's place of prominence and honor.

Keep driving by to see continued progress, or check this web site from time to time as we record our progress for you, our dedicated supporters.
